About me

Hello, my name is Sam Wilson-Powell. It’s important to work with a coach you connect with, and whose style works for you, so here is a bit about me…

Why I became a coach

Background

My background is in television where I spent many years as the executive producer in charge of several high profile, award-winning series, equipping me with a keen understanding of the importance of impactful performance, strong communication skills and crucially, confidence. Nurturing new talent and working closely with established presenters to maximise their on-screen performance was a big part of my job.

I live in Brighton, where I am wife to Nick, mum and step-mum to five creative and talented young individuals, and mistress to a madly energetic and characterful cockerpoo.

I love living close to the sea and spending time in the mountains whenever I can. I adore the solitude - and the exhilaration - of summer hiking, and winter skiing.

Being close to nature is really important to me. It nourishes the soul and has a lot to teach us…

My philosophy

Our relationship with ourselves is absolutely fundamental to our happiness - and yet we tend to underestimate the importance of understanding, managing and caring for our minds.

All too often we limit ourselves from the inside out, thwarting our creativity, our positivity, resilience, and our ability to operate from a place of ease and flow.

To function at our best we need to pay attention to our inner dialogue.

This means doing some deep thinking about our thinking: our values, our assumptions, our patterns, and how we self sabotage.

As your coach I can give you some tools - but in the end, your relationship with yourself and how you respond to life is down to you. However, if you actively choose to maintain a positive mindset, I can assure you that life will feel a lot more fun.

My experience

I am an ICF PCC accredited coach supporting c-suite, senior executives and directors across a wide range of industries from banking to law, hospitality and media. Clients have included HSBC, Channel 4, Moneysupermarket, Co-op, Tesco & Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts.

I have a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities of the workplace.  The insight and unique set of skills I gained from a highly successful career straddling the world of creative and corporate, are highly valued by my clients.

Before coaching, I was an executive at Warner Brothers Television, with the high-pressure role of satisfying department heads at the BBC and Channel 4 that programmes would be delivered on time, on budget and to a high standard: I was the executive producer of high-profile, award-winning series including the BBC's flagship show, 'The Repair Shop', and the global hit parenting series, 'Supernanny', and earnt an exceptional reputation for winning repeat business.

Managing large teams, big budgets, complicated production schedules and on-screen talent were all in a day's work.

Bringing all of these qualities into my coaching, I am passionate about confidence, communication and supercharging self-belief.

Sessions are collaborative, creative and empowering. Clients are left better equipped to meet challenges feeling more resourceful, more confident, and more energised.

Why I became a coach

My TV career was incredibly exciting, successful and rewarding; I was still in my late teens and on my gap year when I landed some work experience in the industry I’d always dreamt of being part of. The rest as they say, is history. My trajectory to executive producer was pretty extraordinary and one of which I’m extremely proud.

MTV, the first ever ‘Big Brother’, ‘Supernanny’, and many, many more exciting productions followed, not least  ‘The Repair Shop’: I was responsible for launching and overseeing the production of the first two series for the BBC.

I genuinely loved my job, but it was also extremely demanding, with very little let up, and I don’t (now) mind admitting, that at times I felt completely overwhelmed, often working late into the night, and feeling paralyzed by fear of failure.

My imposter syndrome (and most of us has one in some form or another), had a nasty habit of popping up just when I needed to turn scripts and proposals around fast. I didn’t grasp it at the time, but more often than not, it’s lack of self belief, not lack of ability, that gets in the way of performing at our best and being at our best. And if I’d been in possession of the knowledge I have acquired through coaching back then, I would have sent any calls of self-doubt straight to voicemail and pressed delete. I would have made more time for fun and I would have been lighter about life.

When I hit my 40s, some big changes occurred in my life which led me to re-evaluate my priorities and rethink my values. I woke up to the fact that I wanted the next chapter of my life to be different, to have more purpose, to be mine. So I took charge of myself and changed career.

I had always wondered if one day I might follow in my mum’s footsteps to become a psychotherapist, but on reflection that didn’t feel quite right for my personality: I’m empathetic – but I also have a lot of energy and am very straight-talking. Both Mum and my step mum, who happens to be a business coach, agreed that coaching would be the perfect fit for me. And in this instance it really did turn out to be the case that mums know best…

So I did some research, took a deep breath and signed up for a rigorous training course. It turned out to be a damascene moment in my life.

Fast forward a few years and I can honestly say that I am more fired up than ever by what can be made possible through coaching.  I’ve been privileged to work with people from all walks of life at all stages, from CEOs leading up to and transitioning company expansion, managers adapting to the challenges of remote working, furloughed employees reappraising life and career choices and individuals preparing for online job interviews.  To date, the vast majority of my clients have come to me through referrals. Almost all have gone on to work with me for 6 months to a year, and in some cases, a number of years.

I never stop marvelling at how powerful, how positive and how helpful a process coaching can be for every single one of us. Pursuing it as my second career was one of the best choices I’ve ever made. My wish is for everyone on the planet to feel less governed by worry and fear, and to feel more positive and more empowered.
